My husband's sister is getting married in August and my mother-in-law offered to buy me a dress for the wedding since we are not doing so well financially right now. I agreed and we picked out a dress I loved, she took my measurements and ordered the dress. When the dress arrived I noticed it is different to what I had originally looked at. It's a different colour and even a different fabric, though it is still a nice looking dress. I tried it on and it looks horrible. I look like a big shiny purple bus wearing this thing. I mention to her that it is a little tight in some areas, hoping this will be enough for her to return it and get something else. She says it will need to be altered as it cannot be returned because it is custom made.
I don't know what to do. She insisted that she spend over $150 and that it be ordered online, which means I didn't have a chance to look at or try it on before it was purchased. I'm almost wondering if she had them change the colour and fabric on purpose, it's that different. I'm not sure how to tell her I don't like the dress, as I am incredibly grateful that she would offer to do this for me and I am afraid she will take it personally and get upset. She is a very emotional woman. In the past when she has purchased gifts for us that have been faulty or had some other problem that weren't her fault, she has gotten incredibly upset when we mentioned it to her. How can I tell her I don't like it without upsetting her?
