Twins share everything, even criminal charges, right?

Long story short, if that's even possible:

BG: While DH was in basic training, he left SIL (who is DHs twin) a checkbook to send child support to his sons mother. The account has been closed now for approximately 2.5 years.

FF- SIL is now currently in rehab and facing up to 10 years in prison for multiple charges including grand larceny and bogus checks. She has also stole from ILs on numerous occasions.

And now..

DHs stepdad calls two weeks ago to let him know he got something in the mail from the county.. He opens it up and it's a warrant for his arrest on a charge of bogus checks. First suspect is obviously SIL. Since she's in rehab, stepMIL is the only one who can talk to her on the phone. SIL admits to finding the old checkbook and writing the check. MIL relays this to us. DH calls the bank, and one check ended up being THIRTEEN checks. Totaling an amount over the felony limit in our state. MIL then backtracked and said SIL said it "was a few."

ILs immediately start the BSC.

"You're going to send your sister to prison."

"A misdemeanor is a slap on the wrist compared to what she has to deal with if you say it wasn't you."

"Just say you accidentally did it."

We BH, as we're so confused with the whole situation.

We've been BH everything since, and have started a TO. DH & I agree that it will be ELC when (if ever) the TO ends.

Here's my issue.. I need a spine. I need to be prepared. I know it's coming. We live in a small town, attend the same church, yada yada. I know I will be approached eventually.

How do I shut down the attempts at GPOTY, woe is me, "why aren't you talking to us?" bull crap?
