Hi all, I'm a long time lurker and created a new name to post on the boards since my old one had my last name in it.
My husband and I have been married for seven years and together for nine, we have 3 kids (girl age 6, boy 4 & 2 year old girl) and expecting our third DD in a matter of weeks.
We've never had a major issue with MIL. Our six year old was her first grandchild so she went a little overboard with gifts and visits when she was a baby, but My husband made some rules about gifts and visits and in over 5 years we haven't had a problem until now.
MIL told us yesterday that she was coming by and was it okay to bring some things she had picked up for the kids? I said sure. She came over and she had backpacks for each of the kids. She hands them over and pulls out her phone to record them unzipping the backpacks. I thought that was a little weird....and then as she's recording I realized why. She had filled the backpacks with Disney related things because she, without asking us, planned a trip to take our 3 oldest kids to Disney the last two weeks of August, to give us time to bond with our new baby. She bought tickets and organized everything and didn't once consult us.
Both my husband and I think this is hugely inappropriate, especially because our older kids have only been away from us one night when the baby was born in may 2011 and the baby has never been away from us. Shouldn't you start with, I don't know, an overnight visit before taking them out of the state for two weeks?
My husband made the kids give the backpacks back to grandma because mommy and daddy need to think about it. Fortunately, MIL didn't put up a fight about it, even with the kids crying because grandma said they were going to Disney and mean mom and dad said maybe not.
Are we wrong in thinking this is crazy and inappropriate? Would you let them go?
