I normally lurk but would love some advice... My DH and I have been married for three years, are in our 30s and are due with a little boy on October 1st. First grandchild for my parents.
My parents have been married for 33 yrs and did a good job as parents to me and my siblings. The issue- they (esp my dad) are a little over zealous with the advice. At our baby shower, one of our presents was a set of three books by John Rosemond about raising children, successful relationships, blah blah blah. My dad has also been emailing and mailing newspaper articles (I think by the same author- don't know as I BH them all) with advice.
I find it a little PA to be getting all this unsolicited parenting advice (it's A LOT) so I talked to my mom about it today. I told her it was a little offensive to keep getting all this stuff when we haven't even had a chance to be parents, screw it up, learn the ropes, what have you. She's a touch histrionic so started crying and asked if I'd read the inscription inside one of the books, etc, as they both meant well with advice. They do mean well but it's so damn pushy.
Anyway, the inscription was fine- said something innocuous about 'we love you and are excited for you'. The part that pissed me off even more than just receiving the books is the fact that there are TONS of sections HIGHLIGHTED. Are you kidding me??!? It's all about teaching your children to be respectful, especially to their elders, and more crap like that!!
My parents obviously see nothing wrong with that so im really on here wondering if there are any good books out there that are geared towards grandparenting in the DWIL approved way... My dad's birthday is coming up and he loves to read. 😈
