Background: I have no experience with alcohol. I have never had a sip in my life and I am 24. I have a reason not to drink because of religious beliefs. My parents never drank (even socially) because of said religious beliefs.
Well FF 20 years. My parents get a divorce and my mom starts drinking. Socially that is. A glass of wine here and there. Sometimes a glass every day. Moms family has a weird relationship with alcohol. Her mom HATED it because all of her uncles were addicts. Her dad hardly touched a drop in his life just....he didn't like it I guess.
Well...my moms brother is....well....not an alcoholic by my definition. But this is what I have a question about.
Whenever we are there for family functions the booze comes out. No one ever gets drunk while I am there but one uncle can get a bit lit. Last time I was there he said something that could have been construed as rude to my moms BF. He's very jovial and eveyone likes him so it was handled graciously and he was given the benefit of the doubt. But then he called my little sister fat in so many words too. Little sis is 12. My mom told him to ease up.
He has had DUIs in the past. And would drink beer while driving. Openly. (They live in small town Colorado.) when the open container law came into being he stopped for the most part.
Gosh that man can drink. He drinks so much. But he never seems drunk to me. Like never stumbling etc. but I have no experience with alcohol so I really don't know if I can trust myself.
Anyways. I personally think its unhealthy behavior to model to children the way he drinks. I'm not really worried too much since we don't see them but for 2-3 times per year since we live in California and they live in Colorado.
I guess I need a normal meter installed. I don't have an alcohol normal meter. Give me one. Should I cut off contact with this uncle? Or make sure to point out to my kids anytime we see him that he has an unhealthy habit? What is appropriate here?
