Am I BEC, or do these comments have deeper meaning?

Been lurking on this board for a few months, new account for privacy...

No BG on here. Been with DH almost 9 years, been married almost 7. Just had our first baby, DD 5 months.

Might be relevant was a huge surprise. Our families bugged us for years about "when are we having babies" and tbh, we always said never mostly to keep them out of our business! FIL made a few comments of "but I want to be papa". (FYI, he's not papa, he's grandpa). Never really acknowledged those statements.

So the day we had DD, no visitors just like we had been saying all along. The next day, we let grandparents meet their granddaughter. 1 hour visits per set. The first thing FIL says to me (during a sniffly hug) was "thank you".

Immediately I didn't like it, but didn't really know how to respond. I ended up looking at him weird, no response, end of hug. DH didn't hear, when I told him later he rolled his eyes.

Since then he's" thanked" me again and has started saying "I'm so proud of you". (through text mostly, we've seen him twice in the last 5 months).

Now, coming from my DH, I would have no problem with these statements and I am actually damn proud of myself. But coming from FIL, it makes me want to scream "I didn't do this for YOU!"

Am I just BEC with my FIL or do his comments have some hidden meaning I'm not picking up on?
