C/O or very limited time spent with paternal grandparents when no longer with the father?

I always read on here "Mommy and baby are a package deal" and that women shouldn't allow the in laws access alone with the child... giving them what they want (the child without dealing with the mother) or "rewarding bad behavior."
My question is... how do you handle the situation when you separate from the child's dad?
